1st July 2026 Portadown to Scarva
A Wonderful Beginning
The North South Way Peace Camino Summer Walk Series began on Wednesday 1st July as participants came together to complete Stage One, walking from Portadown to Scarva along the beautiful Newry Canal Towpath.
People from different backgrounds joined the walk, sharing stories, experiences and hopes for a more peaceful future. Throughout the day there were opportunities for conversation, quiet reflection and moments to simply enjoy walking together in nature.
Walking Together for Peace
As participants made their way along the historic canal corridor, they paused to appreciate the area’s rich heritage, wildlife, waterways and peaceful landscape. The walk reflected the core values of the North South Way Peace Camino, bringing people together through shared experiences, encouraging meaningful conversations, promoting wellbeing and strengthening community connections.
One of the highlights of the day was a visit to Moneypenny’s Forge, where the group received a warm welcome from Jonny Kerr, Heritage Officer with ABC Council. Jonny shared the fascinating history of the forge and provided a guided tour, helping participants connect with another important part of the area’s heritage.
Supporting Research and Learning
The walk was joined by Dr Pamela Whitaker from the Belfast School of Art, Ulster University; Professor Brandon Hamber from Ulster University INCORE; and Abby Hong, a postgraduate student on the MSc Peace and Conflict Studies programme at Ulster University. Abby is supporting the research element of the North South Way Peace Camino as part of her postgraduate studies. By walking alongside participants, she is exploring how shared walking experiences, meaningful conversations and time spent together in nature can contribute to peacebuilding, wellbeing and stronger community relationships.
