Peace Camino Walk – Scarva to Newry
What a wonderful day we had for Stage 2 of our North South Way Peace Camino Summer Walk Series, journeying from Scarva to Newry, a beautiful 10-mile/16 km walk along one of the most peaceful stretches of the Newry Canal.
With the sun shining from start to finish, we set off from Scarva and made our first stop at Acton Lake, where we visited the Sluice Keeper’s Cottage. A huge thank you to Paul O’Neill and all the volunteers from the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland – Newry & Portadown Branch for the warm welcome at the Acton Lake Visitor Centre, with tea and biscuits and a fascinating talk on the history of the canal and surrounding area.
Our journey then continued through Poyntzpass before reaching Canal Wood, where we enjoyed a picnic lunch beneath the shade of the trees. Surrounded by nature, we took time for a guided relaxation meditation, giving everyone the opportunity to slow down, breathe deeply and simply enjoy the peace of the landscape around us.
Feeling refreshed, we continued along the beautiful canal towpath into Newry, where we finished our walk with a well-earned lunch and refreshments at The Kitchen Cafe in Carnbane.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us today, and to all the staff and volunteers who helped make another memorable Peace Camino walk possible. Every step we take together helps build connections, friendships, understanding and peace across our communities.
We look forward to welcoming everyone for Stage 3 later this month to walk together as one for peace.
